PROPERTY TAX WORK OFF PROGRAM
Fiscal Year 2018 (July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018)
Thank you for your interest in this great program. It is a win-win for both residents and the community. Last year, participants in this program offered 2273 hours of valuable service to Town Departments.
There are still openings for this years' program. ~It is not too late to apply.
Residents who are placed with a Town Department(s) agree to work 65 hours by March 31, 2018 and receive a $715 award to be applied to their property tax liability.
The Senior Property Tax Work Off program provides participants with the opportunity to work as temporary, part-time Town of Wayland employees in assigned Town Departments. Applicants who are placed and commit to working 65 hours for a Town Department will receive a $715 award. By vote of Spring Town Meeting, we have been funded for forty, 65- hour positions.
Each year there is increasing diversity in the types of positions available for Tax Work Off participants. The Town departments identify their specific needs for the fiscal year. The COA then reviews each application to match an applicant’s interest and skill set with a departmental need. Although our success rate is very high, placement in the program cannot be guaranteed.
The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) considers residents who participate in the Tax Work Off program to be temporary, part time employees of the Town of Wayland. In addition to the program application and confidentiality form, the following forms are also required for participation in the FY2018 Tax Work Off program:
Annual CORI Check Application (Mandated by the State)
CORI checks must be administered when there is a hiatus in service (Example: you have completed your 65 hours for the current program~and will not be working again until the Town votes to fund another Tax Work Off program).
W-4 Withholding Form
A deduction will be made for Medicare and calculated at 1.5% of your total earnings. A W-2 is issued at year-end to reflect your earnings for the 65 hour position.
I-9 Form: Employment Eligibility Verification mandated by the Department of Homeland Security
This form requires the employee to present a passport or two acceptable forms of identification as listed on the form for compliance verification.
After completing the 65 hours, the one-time payment of $715 is processed.
Residents continue to tell us what a satisfying experience they have. With budgetary restrictions and growing demands, Town Departments are greatly appreciative of the enormous help received from the Senior Tax Work-Off program.
