| A statewide initiative to teach fire education in your community. Wayland Fire has been an active member of the SAFE program since the early 90’s. We currently visit the three elementary schools (K-5) in Wayland to present our fire safety presentations. |
Injury Prevention Program | Wayland also recognizes the fact that many injuries sustained by children are preventable. In 2003, Wayland Fire added the Injury Prevention Program to our fire safety presentations. The Department of Public Health is sponsoring this program through a grant and by providing informational safety materials for the program. We hope that this program will help children recognize potential hazards, and think before they act. |
| In conjunction with our SAFE and Injury Prevention Program, we visit many of the preschools in Wayland. Our main goal for the preschools is recognition - what does a firefighter look and sound like, what does a smoke detector sound like. We also like to conduct fire drills with the preschools to prepare them for the elementary grades. |
| We participate in local babysitting courses by teaching the fire safety portion of the curriculum. |
| Latch key kid courses that are taught by after-school programs in town. We help by teaching the fire safety portion of the class. |
| Target audience is the elderly population of Wayland. We realize that Wayland is a growing community with new construction projects all over town; but Wayland also has a large elderly population and many older homes, especially in the Cochituate area. Wayland Fire has been able to work with the Wayland Council on Aging on supplying free smoke detectors to needy elderly residents. The detectors are purchased by a grant through the Department of Public Health, and installed by our Wayland Firefighters. |
| Has been a great fire safety program that is directed towards all adult ages. We like to say that the class is about “Hands On” fire education. We show the participants what it is really like to be a firefighter by putting them in our shoes. We let students extinguish fires, use the Jaws of Life and even climb to the top of the 75-foot aerial ladder. Fire safety themes are promoted throughout the course. We stress the importance of firefighters in the community. |
| Geared towards fire safety in the workplace. Many employers require their employees to be trained to operate an extinguisher. The course also covers evacuation procedures and the importance of early emergency notification. |
| We offer all levels of CPR certifications to the public. This course is available for the general public, school and health care workers. |
Public Access Defibrillation | |
High School/Fire Department Internship Program | The Wayland High School has worked with our department to put together a comprehensive internship program for one high school senior per year. The intern is exposed to a firefighting career by participating in training, ride-alongs, every-day station life, journal entries and reports. |
| Tours for all groups. Advance notice is needed for larger groups, but we will be more than happy to accommodate a Wayland family who wishes to tour their public safety building and apparatus. |
| Every October, during fire prevention week, Wayland Fire holds its Open House. The fire department opens its door to the public, families and especially children to promote fire safety in our community. Events include: a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog, Free Papa Gino’s pizza, fire engine and station tours, fire hose spray, free gifts and handouts and much more. This event gets bigger and better every year. |
| During Halloween, Wayland station 2 (Cochituate) opens its doors to Wayland children for a spooky but fun party. Food, games, candy and prizes are for everyone, but don’t forget to wear your Halloween costume (that includes you too parents). This event also is a great way to promote fire safety and injury prevention messages. |
Prom Season Mock Auto Accident | Every other school year, before prom season, Wayland Firefighters create a mock auto accident to reiterate the dangers of drinking and driving to the high school body. Fire, Police, Medic units, Out of town apparatus, Med-Flight, the Coroner and High School drama students help to create this real-life tragic scene. After the accident scene, students gather for a general assembly hosted by guest speakers, state police reconstruction teams and emergency room personnel. The consequences of this scenario are discussed, and lessons learned for their future. |
Home Fire Escape Planning | On request, we will be more than happy to help you and your family organize a fire escape plan for your own home. Having smoke detectors in your home is the number one fire safety step, and having a plan and practicing it is number one and a half. Please promote fire safety in your home |
| All Wayland elementary students are invited to participate in the Fire Watch poster contest. The contest promotes home fire escape planning and drills. After planning and practicing your home escape plan, students can submit a colored poster demonstrating fire safety behavior. Thirteen winners will be chosen, and their artwork placed in the Wayland Fire Watch calendar - one for each month and one for the cover. All Fire Watch winners will be recognized at the Wayland Fire Department's Open House during a small ceremony. Please contact the public education phone for more details at 508-358-6922 |
