All Wayland Fire Department emergency medical services can be accessed by using the statewide emergency number 911. In addition to more traditional services, the Wayland Fire Department provides first aid, rescue services, invalid assistance, and emergency ambulance transportation to area hospitals, twenty-four hours per day. "Emergency" as defined in state regulations means a condition or situation in which an individual has a need for immediate medical attention, or where the potential for such need is perceived by the individual, a bystander, or an emergency medical services provider.
The Wayland Fire Department ambulance service is licensed at the basic life support level by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operated in full compliance with state regulations. All full-time fire department personnel are certified Emergency Medical Technicians, basic level. Evaluation of the patient starts when the call for help is received.

Paramedic Level Service Available | If Paramedic level service is needed to care for a patient, Wayland's part time Paramedics or paramedic teams from outside agencies are requested to meet the ambulance and work in conjunction with the Wayland Fire Department ambulance crew. When the paramedics arrive at the patient, a detailed evaluation is conducted and treatment previously available only in the hospital emergency room can be started in the field. Patients, family, and friends should realize that this evaluation and treatment make take several minutes and should not be viewed as a cause for extra concern and does not represent a delay in patient treatment. | | In accordance with state regulations, patients are transported to the emergency room of an "appropriate health care facility". In most cases, this means one of the five local hospitals listed below. Of the five area hospitals, patient preference is usually the determining factor, but in a life-threatening emergency, the nearest hospital is the best choice.
In unusual circumstances, transportation to hospitals outside the area may be appropriate. Hospital destination decisions will be made based on patient needs, determined on a case-by-case basis, by the Wayland Fire Department officer on duty. | | Click for complete details about hospitals | | Several weeks after transport, you may receive a bill for ambulance service. If you have insurance coverage for ambulance transportation, please allow the insurance company to remit the charges to the billing company. The Town of Wayland accepts insurance company assignments for ambulance transportation fees. If you do not have insurance coverage or you are being "balance billed" for the charge and the payment would represent a financial hardship, please notify Fire Chief Robert Loomer via email (rloomer@wayland.ma.us) or phone 508-358-6910. If you have questions about the billing process, you may call Coastal Medical Billing, Inc. (the ambulance billing company) at 508-476-9740 |
