EXCISE TAX
Excise Calculation:
A rate of $25 per one thousand dollars of valuation is levied annually on each motor vehicle. The value for automobiles is taken from the National Automobile Dealers Association Official Used Car Guide (NADA).
The Excise tax will be prorated monthly to cover the months owed for a vehicle registered after January or to refund for a vehicle sold.
Information for excise bills are sent to the town from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
This includes amount, name and address. Any changes in your name and address must be reported directly to the RMV online website at www.marmv.com or (617)351-9380.
Excise Payment:
Payment of the motor vehicle excise is due 30 days from the day the bill is issued. All late payments accrue interest at the rate of 14% and a $15 demand fee is also added on.
On line payments: This service is available only for payments made by the due date.
For payment by ACH debit transfer, or for payment by credit card please logon to www.mcc.net and follow the instructions. There is no charge for a debiting a bank account and a 3% fee to use a credit card. A credit card payment may also be made at the counter of the Treasurer/Collector's Office.
Payments made by check should be mailed in the pre-addressed envelope that was sent with the bill.
A request to your bank to make an “on-line” tax payment actually results in a check being mailed to us. Be aware that it may take up to a week for us to receive the check from your bank. Please clearly indicate in the memo field what bill you are paying since we will not have a copy of the bill.

Selling a vehicle:
If a vehicle is sold or traded in, the license plate must be returned to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The RVM will give you a plate receipt. For a prorated refund on the excise tax, you must bring in the plate receipt, a bill of sale and file an application for abatement at the Assessor's Office. Questions? Call (508)358-3788.
No excise bill will be abated to be less than $5.00.
Moving:
An owner must pay entire year of excise tax to the town in which the vehicle is registered on January 1.
When you move, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (617)351-9380, and the post office must be notified so the excise tax will be levied by the new town for the following year.
