Garden Information

Garden plots are 20 feet by 30 feet, but half-plots may be rented. The garden is divided into tilled and non-tilled areas. The tilled areas are tilled by the Conservation Commission in the spring. In the non-tilled areas the individual gardeners must perform or arrange for their own tilling. Having a non-tilled plot eliminates the burden of erecting and removing fences each year, and permits greater flexibility in gardening practices: see Gardening Rules.

Opening the Gardens

In the spring, tilled plots are identified by white-topped stakes at their corners and an orange stake, bearing the plot number, near the center of each plot. Please return the stakes to the collection point near the bulletin board as soon as you take possession of your plot. Gardeners taking on new untilled plots will need help to identify them. Please call the office for assistance. The posts with yellow tops are our reference posts; please do not move them.

Gardening Supplies

Water is available at several faucets around the garden (hoses are not permitted).
We purchase, and make available, one bale of mulch hay per plot and some manure.

High Demand Plots

There are some plots for which demand always exceeds the supply. In order to treat applicants impartially, the Conservation Commission will use a lottery to assign these high-demand plots when they become available. See Plot Assignment Rules.

Everyone is Welcome

Plots are available to non-Wayland residents on the same basis as residents. All applicants must submit an application form (see Garden Application) which includes signing a release and a commitment that the rules will be obeyed.

A map of lots that were rented in 2008 is available here.

New gardeners should try to come into the Conservation office so that we can help you choose a plot(s). Please call 508-358-3669 to ensure that someone will be on hand to help.

Checks may be made payable to the Town of Wayland. Mail or hand-deliver applications to:
