Lock Box Program - Residential

Residential Lock Box

The Wayland Fire Department's Residential Lock Box Program allows Fire Department personnel to enter your home without causing any damage.  In the event you are unable to unlock the door for the ambulance crew due to illness or injury, or if you are away on vacation and your fire alarm system has been activated, the Fire Department would be able to access your home quickly, without causing any damage.

When the Fire Department is called to a medical emergency or a fire alarm, and the door is locked, the lack of timely access can be a serious problem.  It would be in everyone's best interest for the Fire Department to enter the building quickly and easily, without causing damage.  If keys were hidden outside of the home under a doormat or rock, there would be no security for them, and the Fire Department might not be able to locate them.  Keys left with friends and neighbors are sometimes unavailable.  Having a lock box provides security for your house keys, while keeping them available for emergency crews.

Keys for your home are placed in a high security metal lock box that is attached to the building itself with no visible mounting points that can be accessed for tampering.  Every piece of fire apparatus (including the ambulance) has a key that will open the lock boxes.  Only the Fire Department retains the key that opens these lock boxes.

If this makes you uncomfortable at all, this program is probably not for you.  However, please understand that the Fire Department has access to many properties (both residential and commercial) throughout Wayland, and there has never been a security problem.

These residential lock boxes can be purchased directly from the Wayland Fire Department.  The cost is $60 in check form payable to the "Town of Wayland".  For questions, purchasing and installation, please contact the Fire Department at (508) 358-7951.  Upon installation, you will need to provide a key that opens a door to your home.
