Join the MRC!  New Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers are always needed!  We have a great group of volunteers, however, we would love to recruit new members.  If you are interested in helping out your community and would like to volunteer but have questions, please contact the Health Department at (508) 358-3617 or by email Health@wayland.ma.us

What is the Medical Reserve Corps? The Medical Reserve Corps is a network in the U.S. of community-based units initiated and established by local organizations to meet the public health needs of their communities. It is sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response. The MRC consists of medical and non-medical volunteers who contribute to local health initiatives, such as activities meeting the Surgeon General's priorities for public health, and supplement existing response capabilities in time of emergency. The MRC provides the structure necessary to pre-identify, credential, train, and activate medical and public health volunteers.

What does MRC do in Wayland?  We have a great group of volunteers in Wayland who assist with our flu clinics which are held each year beginning in mid-September with senior clinics and then in October we have 3 large community based flu clinics.  Volunteers can have a medical background to assist with vaccinations or a non-medical background to assist with flu clinic set up, registration, and traffic flow.  When we conduct our flu clinics we are in fact practicing for an emergency situation as a dispensing site that could be suitable for many situations.  If there were a shelter needed in Wayland MRC volunteers may be asked to assist if able to provide medical assistance and/or support to run the shelter.  The Wayland shelter location is at the Middle School.  There are often trainings that are provided to our volunteers during different times of the year such as; first aid, cpr, and other trainings that come up through other agencies which are all voluntary.
