Historic Homes Plaque Program

The Wayland Historical Commission offers to its residents Plaques marking buildings of historical and architectural significance. The goal of this program is to highlight the long and varied architectural history of Wayland, and to remind residents and visitors of the town's heritage. Qualified applicants will receive a plaque listing the building's historic name and construction date. In determining which buildings to include in the program, the Wayland Historical Commission will consider the following criteria:

  • Age:  Buildings which are of advanced age and retain significant original character and design;
  • Event:  Buildings associated with an historic event of local, regional, or national significance;
  • Persons:  Buildings associated with the life of a person or group who have made a notable contribution to local, regional, or national history;
  • Style:  Buildings that embody distinctive characteristics of architectural or construction types.

Interested applicants should complete and submit an application to the Wayland Historical Commission. Final determination on eligibility and construction date will be made by the Wayland Historical Commission. If the application is accepted, a $75.00 fee is charged to cover the cost of the Plaque. The Plaque does not come with a requirement to maintain the house's appearance, nor a requirement that future changes be reviewed; however, the Commission urges owners of historic homes to maintain the building's integrity.
