9.29.21 Town of Wayland PFAS Remediation Update

The Town has recently made significant progress toward the implementation of the selected PFAS6 remediation system designed to address the Town’s drinking water non-compliance. Shortly after receiving the long anticipated MassDEP permit, the Town executed the contract for the lease and installation of the chosen ion exchange equipment with ECT2 who has confirmed that the resin and filtration equipment has been ordered and is anticipated for delivery by mid-November. The Town also signed a contract with Barbato Construction for the installation of the concrete pad at the Happy Hollow wellfield which will act as a foundation for the system and the structure planned to winterize the equipment. The pad is anticipated to be completed by early November in preparation for installation of the PFAS remediation equipment.

The contract to build a structure around the equipment for winterization is expected to be released by mid-October and awarded in early to mid-November, for construction immediately following completion of the installation and testing of the ion exchange system.

Based on this planned construction and installation schedule, the Town is hopeful that water samples treated for PFAS will be taken in late November or early December, allowing the Town to meet the MassDEP regulations for PFAS6 levels as early as the end of calendar year 2021.

The Town also continues efforts to evaluate potential sources of PFAS6 at the Happy Hollow wellfield, but early indications suggest that there are no clearly identifiable sources. The Town has added Monitoring Wells 7 and 8 for testing and removed other sampling and monitoring wells in areas that are not in areas that contribute to the water in the wellfield. Weston and Sampson’s conclusions and report are anticipated by the end of the calendar year. The Town also continues to evaluate a variety of long term options with their engineering contractor for this work, Kleinfelder.
