Permits and Inspections

Frequently Requested Permits
 
New building construction, whether residential or commercial, requires a plan review by the fire department and final inspection.  Three sets of building plans are required.  Once approved, one set is for the Building Department, one set is for the contractor, and one set is left on file at the Fire Department. 
 
The installation of new liquid propane gas service requires a permit and an inspection once the installation is complete. 
 
The installation or alteration of an oil burner requires a permit and an inspection.  If a new burner and tank are being installed, three permit fees are required – one for the new burner, one for removing the old tank, and one for installing the new tank.  Inspection of the old tank may be required by the Wayland Fire Department before it leaves the premises.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information.
 
The installation, removal, or alteration of a new oil tank requires a permit and an inspection of the tank before it leave the premises.  If a tank is removed, and a new tank is to be installed, two permits are required.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) at least 15 minutes prior to the completion of the work to schedule an inspection. 
 
The removal of an above ground or underground oil tank requires a permit and an inspection of the tank before it leaves the premises.  In the case of underground tanks, a soil sample must be taken by the contractor and sent out for testing.
 
Massachusetts requires a 26F inspection of smoke and carbon monoxide devices for the sale or transfer of any residential property.  To schedule a 26F inspection, please call 508-358-7951 between 8:00 a.m. and noon on the day that you would like the inspection.

Black Powder and Ammunition Permits
Permits for the storage of black powder and ammunition are issued by the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Blasting Permits
Any contractor planning to blast must first acquire a blasting permit from the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department at least 48 hours prior to blasting.  A fire detail is required at $45.00 per hour with a 4-hour minimum and must be on site before a hole is loaded and through the shot.  A printout of each blast must be provided. 
 
Fire alarm system permits are required for all residential and commercial new construction, remodels, and additions.  Fire alarm systems installed in existing buildings require plan review and inspection. Fire alarm system alterations to an existing systems (due to remodel or addition) may or may not require plan review.  Please contact the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information.
 
Fixed Fire Suppression System Permits
Permits for fixed fire suppression systems are issued by the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Storage of Hazardous Material Permits
Permits for the storage of flammable gas by a tradesperson are issued by the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Applications for approval of fuel dispensing trucks must be submitted along with payment.  A visual inspection is required prior to issuing the approval and sticker.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Gasoline Storage Permits
Permits for the storage of gasoline are issued by the Wayland Fire Department and are subject to code restrictions.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Gasoline in Non-Inhabited Building Permits
Permits for the storage gasoline (greater than seven gallons) in a non-inhabited building are issued by the Wayland Fire Department and are subject to code restrictions.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Gasoline Station Notification Permits
Permits for gasoline station notification (5-year permit) are issued by the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Salamander/Portable Heater Permits
Permits for salamanders (temporary heat in uninhabited space) are issued by the Wayland Fire Department.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information. 
 
Sprinkler systems installed in new construction require that plans be submitted and approved before a permit will be issued for residential and commercial projects.  Remodels or additions to existing sprinkler systems may or may not require plans.  Once the installation is complete, a final inspection will be conducted.  The fire department requires certification from an installer that the system has been tested.  Please call the fire department (508-358-7951) for more information or to schedule an inspection.
