CAMPER EXPECTATIONS (please share with your child!) We have lots of rules specific to groups and activities, but these are the general rules to help campers enjoy a successful summer.

  • Be safe at all times. Keep your hands to yourself.
  • Be respectful of yourself, your counselors and your fellow campers.
  • Stay with your counselors and listen to them at all times. (Remember: your counselors’ #1 goal is to keep you safe!)
  • Tell your counselors right away if you are upset about something or if you need help. They are here for you!
  • Be patient, tolerant, and include others.
  • Treat others with kindness, just as you would like to be treated.
  • Leave all electronics and toys at home. This includes cell phones and ”smart” watches.
  • Keep your lunch food to yourself (no tossing, sharing or swapping with others!)
  • Be willing to try new things, and give every activity your best effort.
  • HAVE FUN!

COMMUNICATION
Parents will receive a weekly camp newsletter on the Wednesday/Thursday prior to attending a camp session, this newsletter will have specific details about your campers schedule and activities for that week. We don't post those details online for campers safety. If your child ever says anything about camp that is concerning to you, please connect with us right away. Parents are our most important partners in ensuring a successful camp experience.

ABSENCE / LATE ARRIVAL
Do not send symptomatic campers to camp. If your camper will be absent or late, please email rec@wayland.ma.us or call 508-358-3660 to let us know.
State law requires that you contact us when your child will be absent.  Include your child’s name, group, if the absence is going to be for an extended period, please state that also.
If you will be late to camp, after activities have started, please call the phone number posted at the entrance and staff will help your camper find their camp group.

PICK-UP/ DISMISSAL
Any and all persons (even parents) who pick up a camper must show a photo ID, and sign out each camper with our staff. Afternoon Pick-Up will be SLOW until your counselors learn who you are! This is for the camper’s safety. Send changes to your list of people authorized to pick-up campers in writing to rec@wayland.ma.us. Late pick-ups will automatically be enrolled in the Extended Day program until 5:00 p.m. provided there is space, fees apply.

VOLUNTEER & VISITOR POLICY
Given the extensive background checking, onboarding and training required to carry out the goals of the camp program, volunteers who have not adhered to all hiring policies, orientations and trainings are not permitted at Wayland Recreation Summer Camps. Visitors, including parents are limited to 15 minute supervised visits at Wayland Recreation Summer Camps. Visitors must schedule visits and check-in with the Camp Director prior to the visit.

WALKING HOME | DISMISSING SELF
If your child is over 12 years old, and you wish to grant permission to dismiss him/herself by walking or biking home, we need this permission in writing that indicates specific dates and times. Examples: “Only at dismissal time”, ”Only from the High School.” “Only on Wednesdays”. Please inform staff of all self dismissals in writing.

RAINY DAYS | SCHEDULE CHANGES
Drop-Off Changes will be posted on waylandrec.com, the Wayland Rec Facebook page, and/or by email before 8:30 am.
If rain or thunderstorms are forecasted, with as much notice as possible all campers will relocate to indoor classrooms inside Wayland High School. We've got tons of fun indoor activities in store.
If weather like rain or high heat prevents campers from enjoying outdoor activities after drop-off time, at the Pool or at the Town Beach, the children will be moved under cover until proper dismissal can occur.

  • Beach Buddies – Relocate to Wayland Town Building / The Children's Way at 41 Cochituate Road, Wayland MA 01778
  • Summer Adventure – Camp activities will occur at WHS rain/shine. Groups will move indoors whenever appropriate. For Field Trips that are subject to weather related cancelations (water parks, pool, beach, etc.) campers will remain at Wayland High School and/or reschedule trips.
  • Wayland Escapes – For Field Trips that are subject to weather related cancelations (pool, beach, etc.) campers will remain at Wayland High School and/or reschedule trips.
  • Sports Camps - For sport activities that are subject to weather related cancelations, campers will remain at Wayland High School Field House and/or alter the activity schedule.

HOT DAYS
We take every precaution to keep your children cool and comfortable during heat waves. As you know, your child’s safety and well-being are our number one concern.
Counselors will ensure that their campers are taking frequent water breaks, regulate midday outdoor activities to account for the heat. Please be sure to send your child to camp well hydrated and have a conversation with them on the importance of drinking water throughout the day. Our staff plan alternative indoor activities or water games to provide relief from the heat.

SUN PROTECTION
Parents are encouraged to send a hat, sunglasses, and/or protective clothing. The importance of sun protection and staff responsibilities are reviewed at staff training. Parents should apply any sunscreen (SPF 25 or greater) and/or lip balm to children BEFORE camp drop off. Parents have an opportunity at camp registration to authorize staff for the topical application of sunscreen. Parents must provide campers with non-medicated, waterproof sunscreen in its original container and labeled with the child’s full name for reapplication during camp day. If permission to apply is denied, staff cannot apply sunscreen to children, but will assist, remind and direct children.

FIRST AID & “OUCH FORMS”
All of our staff are CPR and First Aid trained annually, which includes Allergy Awareness and Epi-Pen training. All Epi-Pens and Inhalers require a Medication Form. If a camper is injured at camp that requires Basic First Aid, staff and counselors will document the incident with an ‘Ouch Form’. Ouch Forms are three carbon-copy forms.  After the incident the Ouch Form will be used to communicate the event to the parent, parent will sign and return the "Ouch Form".

INSECT REPELLENT
Should be applied before arrival to the program, and carried for re-application. Provide insect repellant in its original container and labeled with the child’s full name for reapplication. All children are reminded throughout the day or whenever appropriate.

HAND SANITIZERS and ANTIBACTERIAL GELS
Recreation Staff cannot apply ANTIBACTERIAL HAND SANITIZER to campers. The Camp will supply antibacterial hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol as well as hand washing stations with soap and water.  Staff will encourage, remind and direct children to wash hands. Hand sanitizer may be used with parental permission, though hand-washing is the preferred method.  Hand sanitizer will be stored securely and used only under supervision of staff. Staff must make sure children do not put hands wet with sanitizer in their mouth and instruct children of the proper use.

BIRTHDAYS AT CAMP
Our staff will make your camper feel special on their birthday. Please do not bring birthday cakes/cupcakes for a group, we cannot allow outside food at camp.
