Town of Wayland Updates PFAS Remediation Activities

Wayland, Massachusetts - The third quarterly public notice regarding PFAS6 was mailed to all Wayland residents on Monday October 25, 2021. Test results for PFAS6 at the Town’s drinking water well supplies continue to test stable with the Happy Hollow wellfield being the only location that remains out of compliance with the new DEP standards. The Chamberlain wellfield continues to test consistently below the maximum contaminant level for PFAS6, but not low enough to be removed from the monthly testing obligation. The Town must continue to test Happy Hollow and Chamberlain monthly as per Massachusetts DEP regulations. The Town has demonstrated that we are consistently and reliably below the maximum contaminant level for PFAS6 at both the Campbell and Baldwin Pond wellfields, resulting in a reduced quarterly monitoring schedule.

The Town continues to make progress with respect to the implementation of the PFAS6 remediation equipment at the Happy Hollow wellfield. The construction of a concrete pad and foundation, on which the equipment that will remove PFAS6 from the drinking water supply at Happy Hollow will reside, is scheduled to begin October 25, 2021. By November 19, 2021 the pad will be completed. During the 7 to 14 day curing period for concrete, the Town will complete the connections to prepare for the delivery and installation of the resin filtration equipment. The Town anticipates full system implementation and start-up by mid-December, 2021. While the Town has revised its sample water testing schedule for for PFAS to mid-December, we fully anticipate meeting the MassDEP regulations for PFAS6 levels across all wells as early as year end. The Town anticipates receiving the post-filtration implementation test results the first week of January 2022.

The bid to construct the building which will house and provide winterization for the equipment, will be issued on October 27, 2021, with a contract award anticipated by mid-November, 2021. Construction of the aforementioned building will immediately follow the PFAS mitigation equipment installation and successful start-up testing.

The Town continues working to identify potential sources of PFAS at the Happy Hollow wellfield. The Town has added Monitoring Wells 7 and 8 for testing and removed other sampling and monitoring wells in areas that are not in areas that contribute to the water in the wellfield. The Town will be coordinating the timing of PFAS sample collection to determine whether the drinking water and groundwater PFAS composition can be further identified.
