About the Fund

What kind of help do we provide?

The Wayland Community Fund provides assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year (as stipulated in the bequest).  Payment is made directly to vendors or suppliers of services.  Cash is not given to applicants, but we do provide grocery store food vouchers.  In the first eighteen years of operation, we have provided more than $500,000 in assistance to Wayland residents.

The fund provides assistance for:

  • Utilities;
  • Rent;
  • Medical Expenses;
  • Medicine;
  • Food;
  • Clothing;
  • Essential Expenditures.

Who do we help?

Most of the people we help have multiple problems: including unemployment, health problems, and a shortage of food.  Additionally, people who reside in Wayland and other suburban communities may not have access to many of the services available to inner city residents.

Many of the residents we help are:

  • Individuals and Families faced with chronic or terminal illness;
  • Individuals and Families faced wtih utility shutoff and/or eviction;
  • Parents and elderly residents who have run out of food;
  • Homeless adults, inlcuding single parents with children;
  • Grandparents living on social security and raising toddlers.

Often, these residents do not appear to be in financial difficulty as they do their best to keep up appearances.  They are, however, in serious need, and that is where the WCF tries to step in with financial assistance that preserves the privacy and dignity of the resident.

How do we operate?

The Wayland Community Fund receives no public funding.  The volunteers cover their own expenses and receive no reimbursement.  When a request for help is received, we return the call as soon as possible.  Applicants are asked to fill out an application that includes some financial information.  Names and personal information remain confidential and are used, with the applicant's permission, only when additional verification is needed.  100% of every dollar donated goes to helping Wayland residents.

Any Wayland resident in financial need may leave a confidential message on our helpline: (781) 531-5435.  If you know someone who needs financial help, call to leave a private message.
