Wayland Community Fund

June 2023 Update

The Wayland Community Fund (WCF) provides short-term emergency financial assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. WCF provides funding for basic needs such as utilities, rent, food, medical bills, and other living expenses. WCF is expecting the Coronavirus epidemic to present additional requests.  WCF receives no public funding. It relies primarily on contributions from Wayland residents and a few businesses, supplemented by a small trust fund created 20 years ago. The WCF is staffed by volunteers who keep overhead costs to a bare minimum. Expenses are limited to services, supplies, and fees necessary to maintain our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

Overview:

The Wayland Community Fund (originally, the Wayland Charitable Committee) was established by the Wayland Commissioners of Trust Funds in 1997 to provide short-term, emergency financial assistance to Wayland residents who have lived in Wayland for at least one year.

Originally funded by a bequest from the late Suzanne Leavitt, the WCF is now funded by both her bequest and charitable contributions from Wayland residents and organizations.  It is managed by five appointed volunteer professionals. The fund has no overhead or administrative expenses.

Suzanne Leavitt was a WWI French war bride who married John Leavitt of Wayland.  They lived here for many years.  Suzanne Leavitt spent her final years in Florida, but remembered Wayland in her will with her bequest to the community.
