How Do I... Read My Water Meter

Knowing how to read your water meter is very important for many reasons, in case you have a leak, or if youre even just curious about how much water youre using every day. To find out how much water you use every day, you can compare the readings from the beginning of the day and the end of the day.

Step 1: Locating Your Water Meter

Your water meter is located in the basement along the wall closest to the street.

Step 2: Read Your Water Meter:

All residents within the Town of Wayland have their water usage measured by a water meter. Wayland's water meters measure water in cubic feet (1 cubic ft ≈ 7.5 gallons). Your water bill is calculated using the amounts of units, (1 unit = 100 cubic ft ≈ 748.05 gallons), used during a billing period.

Types of Water Meters

Straight-Reading Meter:

The majority of Waylands water meters are the straight-reading type of meter, which resembles an odometer in a car. You can read how much water (in cubic ft) has been used since the meter was installed from the numbers above the words "CUBIC FEET".

Digital Water Meter:

There are 9 digits on the digital meter. Only the first 4 numbers on the far left are programmed in 100 cubic ft, and read. You can monitor the 9th digit on the far right, to check for leaks.
