New Electricity Program to Launch In May For Wayland Residents and Businesses

Wayland Electricity Choice
WAYLAND, MA – The Town of Wayland is pleased to announce the launch of Wayland Electricity Choice, a type of group electricity buying program from the Town that gives residents and businesses more choice and control over the electricity they buy. Wayland joins nearly 170 other Massachusetts communities that have this type of electricity program (called an “aggregation”), including Natick, Lincoln, and Sudbury.

Through Wayland Electricity Choice and the collective buying power of the community, Wayland electricity customers will get more of their electricity from renewable sources for a price that is lower than Eversource’s current residential Basic Service price; however, future savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed. Wayland received state regulatory approval for the program in December 2023, and the program will launch in May of 2024.

Wayland Electricity Choice participants will see a change in their electricity supplier and in the price that Eversource uses to calculate the Supply portion of their electric bill. However, Eversource remains Wayland’s electric utility, and they will continue to deliver electricity in Wayland, address power outages, and send electric bills.

The Program has three options:
  1. Wayland Standard Green
    • New participants in Wayland electricity choice will be automatically enrolled in this option
    • Participants will receive an additional 20% of their electricity from renewable sources for 13.224¢/kWh – this is a savings of nearly 4¢/kWh compared to Eversource’s current residential price of 17.216¢/kWh which is in effect through July 31, 2024.
  2. Wayland 100% Green
    • Participants can elect to opt up to this option that provides electricity that is 100% from renewable sources for 15.384¢/kWh
    • Information about opting up can be found on the program website WaylandElectricityChoice.com
  3. Wayland Economy
    • Participants can elect to opt down to this option that provides the minimum renewable electricity required by state law for 12.424¢/kWh
    • Information about opting down can be found on the program website WaylandElectricityChoice.com
The Town has signed a contract with First Point Power that will keep Wayland Electricity Choice prices fixed and stable for 24 months. In comparison, Eversource’s Basic Service prices change every 6 months or less, and their future prices are not known.

For most Wayland electricity customers, no action is required to participate. In accordance with state law, electricity customers in Wayland with Eversource’s Basic Service are eligible for automatic enrollment when the program launches in May and will first see a Wayland Electricity Choice price on their bill in June. The Town will mail automatic enrollment notifications with program details in late March. All official program communications will feature the Wayland Town Seal.

Participation in Wayland Electricity Choice is not required. Wayland electricity customers have the right to opt out of the program before being automatically enrolled, or can try the program and opt out at any time with no penalty or fee. Those who opt out will remain with Eversource’s Basic Service pricing. Information about how to opt out will be included in the automatic enrollment notification and on the program website WaylandElectricityChoice.com.

Electricity customers who have signed private electricity supply contracts will not be enrolled automatically, but they can request enrollment online at WaylandElectricityChoice.com or over the phone by calling the Town’s program consultants at 1-844-202-6400. Those with private contracts are encouraged to first check the terms of their electricity supply agreement before making a change to avoid penalties like early termination fees.

Anyone eligible for a low-income discount from Eversource will continue to receive that discount. In addition, anyone receiving solar credits or incentive payments will continue to receive them with no change to how the credits or incentive payments themselves are calculated.

The public is invited to two public information sessions about the program in the Wayland Town Building at 41 Cochituate Road:
