Town of Wayland Receives Safe Harbor Designation

Wayland -  The Town of Wayland announced today that the State Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities has approved the Town’s Housing Production Plan (HPP).  Certification of the Town’s HPP now means that the Town will retain “Safe Harbor” status for the next two years expiring on June 13, 2025.  Safe Harbor designation is a critical designation as it now means the Town has met the required 10% subsidized housing inventory (SHI) and therefore has further control over M.G.L. ch.40B developments.

Town Manager Michael McCall stated, “Certification of the Town’s Housing Production Plan and acquiring Safe Harbor status for the next two years are important achievements for the Town.  With Safe Harbor status, the Town can now focus on how to best manage growth in way that fits into the character of the community.  The certification letter from the State is a testament to the hard work of many town volunteers and staff.  We hope to continue to grow our SHI to the point where we are comfortably above the 10% threshold with hard work and innovative approaches to housing. ”

The Town of Wayland retains Safe Harbor status for the next two (2) years.  However, all units calculated as part of the town’s SHI must retain eligibility for the entire certification period.  If not, the Town may risk falling under the 10% SHI threshold.
