Ski Program

Learn to Ski at Nashoba Valley Ski Area
ski lesson

Ski program will begin January 4, 2025.

Wayland Rec has been offering ski trips to the community since 1976!

WHAT TO BRING
The Recreation Department has arranged for all admission to the Ski Area and all transportation therefore bringing spending money is not necessary as kids can pack a snack, lunch, and water if needed.

  • LIFT TICKET/BADGE: On the first Saturday, your child will be issued a Ski Lift badge.  Badges must be worn each session. Without this, Nashoba Staff will not allow access to the slopes. Replacement tags are $5.00 each. Contact Rec if needed. A common mistake is to attach the tag to a ski jacket and then wear a different jacket the next trip.
  • SPENDING MONEY Participants can bring cash to purchase snacks, drinks or replacement lift tags at the lodge, this is common. Wayland Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen cash, or a participant’s inability to calculate or wait for expected change. Restrooms are also located in the Main Lodge.

WHAT TO WEAR
Please ensure that your child/children are dressed appropriately with a warm jacket, snow pants, hat, and gloves each week. (Marked with names!)

  • Wear pants, long sleeves, and gloves even on warm days.
  • Put on a hat or helmet that covers your ears.
  • Wear 100% UV protection goggles or sunglasses.
  • Apply generous amounts of SPF 30+ sunscreen on exposed skin

  • For safety, the use of a helmet is highly recommended while on the slopes and can be purchased or rented at the ski fitting from Nashoba.

SUPERVISION

  • Our Ski program is a bit of a “free-range” program where kids have independence and freedom to enjoy the mountain with friends.
  • Nashoba Valley Ski Area additionally provides Ski Patrol on the top and bottom of each slope and provide a Nurse.
  • Staff & Chaperones supervise and facilitate equipment rentals and lessons. They do rounds and are available to all participants through the Nashoba First Aid Office.
  • If your child needs to speak to a chaperone for any reason, they should go to the First Aid Office to connect with a Wayland chaperone.

PARENT CHAPERONES

  • Please consider being a chaperone this year. This program is only possible because of parent volunteers like you. To volunteer, please email rec@wayland.ma.us
  • Chaperones main duties involve supervising, loading and unloading children and their equipment on the bus. Staff from Wayland Recreation and Nashoba Valley meet the buses at the mountain. We need 2-3 adult chaperones on each bus. Chaperones also ski for FREE and get FREE equipment rentals, though chaperones are not required to ski to volunteer.  All chaperones will also have the transportation fee waived on one youth Ski Program registration because they are required to ride the bus.
  • All chaperones undergo mandatory CORI/SORI background checks. Chaperones must be 18 years old.

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY

  • Buses leave from Town Building at 8:00 am sharp.
  • Buses return to Town Building around 12:30 p.m.
  • Do not idle in the parking lot, its state law.
  • All children are required to ride the bus to the ski area and are WITHOUT EXCEPTION required to return to the Wayland Town Building on the bus. Given the number of skiers, staff and chaperones on each trip, we cannot allow individual participants to make separate arrangements.
  • All buses will park along the walkway at the back entrance of Town Building. Do not block this area.  This allows children to disembark the bus directly onto the sidewalk where they can safely wait to be picked up.This safety plan will keep children safe in the parking lot.  We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

TIMES

  • The program runs 7:45 am – 12:30 pm. The bus leaves at 8:00 am with or without you, and pick-up is promptly at 12:30 pm at Town Building.
  • Do not be late, it is unacceptable to have children (and chaperones/staff) wait out in the cold.   Fees may apply for late pick-ups.
  • Children must return rentals and board the buses at 11:45 am. Nashoba makes announcements over the PA system to remind skiers.

CANCELATIONS

  • Cancelation announcements will be made as soon as applicable and posted here at www.wayland.ma.us/ski. You will also be contacted via email.

  • Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  • Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
