Garden Information
Garden Plots:
Garden plots are approximately 20 feet by 30 feet. The garden is divided into tilled and non-tilled areas. The tilled areas are tilled by the Conservation Commission in the spring. In the non-tilled areas the individual gardeners must perform or arrange for their own tilling. Having a non-tilled plot eliminates the burden of erecting and removing fences each year, and permits greater flexibility in gardening practices: see Gardening Rules. However, there is a need to police materials in non-tilled plots as well. Please do not use plastics, plastic mulch, or other non biodegradable materials. Water is available at several faucets around the garden (hoses are not permitted). Hay bales are provided to gardeners who wish to purchase, but there is a limit of two bales per plot being rented.
All 2017 Garden Applications have been mailed out to current gardeners, any new gardeners should stop by the Conservation office to pick-up an application or fill one out from online and mail it to us.
Current Gardeners:
If you rent a plot and then decide not to garden by June please contact the Conservation office. This is both in consideration of other active gardeners, the encroachment of weeds, providing plots for all who are going to garden, and the expense by the Commission to maintain these plots. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, as agreed upon by the Commission, the plot assignment may be forfeited for future years. Consideration and respect for all of the gardeners is a key to the overall successful operation of the community gardens.
End of Season Note: Again wish to note that you are expected to clean up your plot at the end of the season. Every year material is left which is adding to the work of plowing and also laying out the garden. There is also materials, such as tarps, being used for ground cover, in all plots. Please do not leave it at the end of the season as it creates problems for the future. Please remove all planting labels before the season ends.
New Gardeners:
Plots are available to non-Wayland residents on the same basis as residents. All applicants must submit an application form which includes signing a release and a commitment that the rules will be obeyed.
New gardeners should try to come into the Conservation office so that we can help you choose a plot(s). Please call (508) 358-3669 to ensure that someone will be on hand to help.
